Dal tadka

Dal tadka is a popular Indian dish where cooked spiced lentils are finished with a tempering made of ghee(clarified butter) and aromatic spices. Lentils are a great source of protein& nourishment and are served in Indian households on a regular basis. Dal tadka is a flavorful and comforting Indian lentil dish which is super easy to make. It is served with butter naan, tandoori roti, phulka, steamed basmati rice and jeera rice. Various lentils may be used to make dal tadka, the most popular version use Arhar dal (Toor dal), mixed with moong dal, Chana dal or masoor dal. Today I will share with you the recipe of Dal tadka using Toor dal and moong dal. So Lets start the recipe.

Cooking time : 30 mins

Total time : 50 mins

Servings : 3-4

Ingredients required :

1.) Arhar dal (Tur dal) - 1/2 cup

2.) Moong dal - 1/3 cup

3.) Onion - 1 medium finely chopped

4.) Tomato - 1 medium finely chopped

5.) Garlic - 5-6 cloves finely chopped

6.) Green chilli - 1 finely chopped 

7.) Coriander leaves - few finely chopped

8.) Cumin seeds - 2 teaspoon

9.) Red chilli powder - 1/2 tablespoon

10.) Dried red chilli - 2

11.) Desi Ghee (Clarified butter) -  2-3 tablespoon

12.) Asafoetida (hing) - 1 teaspoon

13.) Kasmiri red chilli powder (optional) - 1 teaspoon 

Method :

1.) In a large pot/pressure cooker take tur dal, moong dal and rinse well for about 3-4 times. Then soak it in 3 cups of water, turmeric and 1 tsp of salt for about 20 mins.


2.) Chop onion, tomatoes, green chillies, coriander leaves and keep it aside Pressure cook dal for 3-4 whistles or untill soft and mushy. 

3.) Take a pan/pot add 1 tbsp of desi ghee. To it add hing, cumin seeds and let it crackle.

4.) Now add chopped garlic, green chillies and saute it for few seconds.

5.) Further add chopped onions and saute it till onions becomes transluscent.

6) Now add powdered spices red chilli powder, salt, Amchur powder and mix it well. To it add chopped tomatoes and saute till it becomes soft and mushy.


7.) To this mixture add pressure cooked dal and mix it well. Cover it with a lid and let it simmer for 10 mins.

8.) Take a tadka pan, add 1 tbsp of desi ghee, to it add dried red chilli, cumin seeds, kashmiri red chilli powder and add it to the dal for extra flavour. (This is the second tadka that we add in the dal which enhances the taste of Dal tadka).


9.) Garnish it with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot Dal tadka with chapati, steamed rice or jeera rice. Enjoy 👍.
