Coconut chutney

Coconut is a popular ingredient in south indian cooking and coconut chutney is just the perfect companion for idlis (steamed rice cakes), dosas ( south indian rice pancakes), uttapams, medu vadas and other popular dishes of south india. It can be eaten fresh or prepare ahead of time and freeze it. It is very easy to make and tastes good. Lets learn how to make it.

Servings : 4

Ingredients needed :
1.) Fresh coconut grated (i have used here frozen shredded coconut) - 1 bowl
2.) Mustard seeds - 1 tsp
3.) Coriander leaves - few chopped
4.) Curry leaves - few chopped
5.) Urad dal - 1 tsp roasted
6.) Chana dal - 1 tsp roasted
7.) Dried red chilli - 2
8.) Oil - 2 tsp
9.) Asafoetida - a pinch
10.) Salt - as per taste
11.) Green chillies - 1 chopped

Method of Preparation:

1.) Grind the grated coconut, urad dal, chana dal, coriander leaves, green chillies into a fine paste in a food processor or grinder. Add salt to the paste and take it out in a bowl.


2.) To temper the chutney, heat oil in a small pan add mustard seeds once it splutters, add dried red chilli and curry leaves and asafoetida. Saute it for 2 mins, stirring frequently to prevent burning untill all ingredients are darker and aromatic.

3.) Now remove it from the heat and add it to the coconut paste. Mix it well.


4.) Serve it with steamed idlis, dosas, uttappams. Enjoy.
