Veg momos

Momos are steamed dumplings made with flour and a savoury stuffing. This stuffing can be made of chicken, mutton, seafood, veggies and paneer (cottage cheese). They have originated from Tibet and now is a popular street food in the country especially in north india. Momos can be steamed, baked or fried. This recipe is for making steamed momos and has a stuffing of mix vegetables and paneer. Momos are not spicy but the sauce or chutney that is served with these is spicy,  Here I have shown you how to make momos along with spicy red momos chutney. So without much delay, let's start the recipe.

Cooking time : 30 mins

Servings : 7-8 ( Around 25 dumplings)

Ingredients required for making Momos 

1.) All purpose flour /Maida - 400gm

2.) Cabbage - 1 small 

3.) Green capsicum - 1 medium

5.) Onion - 1 Large 

6.) Red capsicum - 1 small

7.) Green chillies - 3 finely chopped

8.) Ginger - 1 inch piece finely chopped

9.) Garlic - 5-6 cloves finely chopped

10.) Soya sauce - 1 tsp

11.) white vinegar - 1 tbsp

12.) Black pepper powder - 1 tsp

13.) Salt - as per taste

14.) Oil - 2-3 tbsp

15.) Water - as required

Ingredients for making spicy momos chutney 

1.) Dried red chillies - 6-7

2.) Tomato - 3 medium sized

3.) Garlic - 5-6 cloves

4.) Ginger - 1/2 inch piece

5.) Salt - as per taste

6.) Water - as required

How to make momos - So here I have divided this post into 5 easy steps to make you understand better.

1.) Making the dough - In a large bowl, take Maida, 1/4th tsp salt, 1 tsp oil and mix well with a spoon.

2.) Add 2-3 tbsp of water in parts and begin to knead to a firm dough. If required add 1-2 tbsp more water. Cover the dough with moist napkin and let it rest for 30 mins.

3.) Making of veggie stuffing - Finely chop the vegetables. Heat 2 tbsp of oil in a pan, add finely chopped garlic, ginger and green chillies. Saute it for 1 min on medium low heat.


4.) Add all finely chopped vegetables and paneer, stir fry all veggies on medium flame. Saute for 2-3 mins and then add soy sauce, vinegar, black pepper powder and salt as per taste.


5.) Continue to stir fry for another 2-3 mins on medium to high heat. Switch off the flame, check the taste and add more soy sauce,vinegar, black pepper, salt if needed. 

6.) The vegetable stuffing is ready. Let it cool completely.

7.) Shaping of Momos - Divide the dough in two parts and make a 7-8 inches long from each part and cut the log into equal balls. Take each dough ball and start rolling into thin circle of about 3-4 inches diameter. The edges have to be thin and center has to be thick.

8.) Place 2-3 teaspoons of vegetable filling in the center, lift one side of the edge and start pleating. Begin to pleat the momos and join all the pleats in the center. Prepare all the momos this way and keep them covered under a moist napkin until you are ready to steam them.

9.) Steaming veg momos - Grease a steamer pan with some oil. Arrange them in the pan keeping space between them. Keep it aside.


10.) Preparing Momos chutney - Soak 6-7 dried red chillis in 1 cup of water for 30 mins. 

11.) Blanch 3 tomatoes in water for 10 mins. Once they are soft, peel off the skin from tomatoes.

12.) Add tomatoes, chopped garlic cloves, 1/2 inch ginger piece, dried red chillies,1tsp salt in mixer grinder and grind it to semi liquid paste. Your spicy momos chutney is ready.


13.) Steam the momos in an electric cooker or steamer pan, add 2-3 cups of water in the pot or pan while steaming. Cover and steam the momos for 10-12 mins or till the outer dough becomes transparent.(The steaming time of momos may vary upon the thickness of the momos cover.)


Quick tip : After the momos are steamed, when you touch the dough it should not feel sticky. The momos should be transparent.

14.) Serve hot momos with spicy red chutney. Enjoy guys.
